Malaga Airport History

The first aircraft landed at the spot which would become Malaga Airport in 1919. The airport was originally opened to provide a link between France and French overseas colonies in Africa and South America.

During World War II the airport was used as a military base, finally opening for domestic and international air traffic in 1946.

The 1960s saw the airport develop in response to increased air traffic, the runway was extended and a new terminal was built.

Throughout Malaga Airport's history it has been known as "El Rompedizo" and "García Morato". In 1965 it was officially renamed as Malaga Airport, and in 2011 the airport's name was changed again to Malaga-Costa del Sol Airport.

The "Malaga Plan" is currently underway - which includes plans for a new terminal and further extension of the airfield.
