Stansted Airport History

Stansted Airport was originally known as RAF Stansted Mountfitchet, used during World War II. It was used as a bomber airfield by the Royal Air Force and the United States Army Air Force. Stansted was used for RAF storage purposes after 1945, and between 1946 and 1947 it was used for housing German prisoners of war.

After the war, The Ministry of Civil Aviation used the airfield as a base for several UK charter airlines and the airport continued to be used by civilians, with BAA gaining ownership in 1966.

The Fire Service Training School was based at the airfield and was responsible for training all aviation fire crews during the 1960s, 1970s and early 1980s.

Stansted opened its first terminal building in 1969 and further expansions to the terminal were completed the next year to accommodate the growing passenger numbers.

Overseas long-haul services began operating in the early 1990s from Stansted.
