LOS ANGELES VAN NUYS HISTORY

Van Nuys airport was first opened in 1928, as a metropolitan airport servicing the Los Angeles area.

Van Nuys airport became popular with Hollywood stars in the 1930s, who enjoyed the airport’s privacy. It almost went bust during the Depression, but was saved by Hollywood filmmakers, who turned to the airport as a filming location for many famous aviation scenes in films, including Casablanca. Van Nuys airport was purchased by the US Government in 1942 and converted into a military base for use during World War II. It was sold to the City of Los Angeles after the war and then became known as the San Fernando Valley Airport. It was officially named Van Nuys Airport in 1957.

Today, Van Nuys is owned by Los Angeles World Airports and is one of the world’s busiest business aviation airports, contributing $1.3 billion annually to the US economy.
