O.R. Tambo International Airport History

O.R. Tambo International Airport was originally built in the 1920’s and was known as the Rand Airport. As aircraft size and numbers increased, plans were made to build a new airport on a new site to accommodate these, and Jan Smuts Airport opened in 1952.

The airport was renamed airport Johannesburg International in 1994 after a new policy came into place whereby airports were not to be named after politicians. However, after this policy was overturned in 2006, the airport was again renamed O.R. Tambo International Airport, after Oliver Tambo, the former President of the African National Congress.
