The airport was initially built as a temporary military airport during the Spanish Civil War, but later closed in 1951. By 1958 the airport was re-opened, and continued to expand as Ibiza became a popular summer destination. In 1966 Ibiza Airport was opened for international flights and opening hours increased to 24 hours. Today the airport main terminal is busy during the summer months, and one of the private jet set's most popular summer destinations.
