History

The airfield of Kortrijk-Wevelgem was build in 1916 by the Germans. During the World War II, the airport was used by the English Air Force. Afterwards it was returned to Belgium. At that time, Kortrijk-Wevelgem Airport was used for gliding and leisure flights.

The airport was split into 3 zones (north of the runway, south of the runway and the runway itself) was handed over in 1972 to the “West Vlaamse Intercommunale Vliegveld Wevelgem – Bissegem” due the construction of a motorway along the airport and later the building of a tunnel underneath the runway.

Since 1995, Kortrijk-Wevelgem Airport was made an international airport. And in 2006 it became one of the regional airports of Flanders. Nowadays the airport is mainly used for private aviation.

Kortrijk-Wevelgem Airport has also an aviation museum. The Flanders Aviation Society was able to present an expo, which includes a visit to the museum, a video of the history of the airport, followed by a tour of the airport.
