History
The airport site was first used as an airfield by a flying club in the 1920s. Construction of the area into a major international airport began in the early 1960s. The first commercial flight took place in November 1965. Another international terminal was built in 1977.
The airport also commenced the building of a second runway in 2007 in order to handle the projected increase in aircraft movements. It is planned that the new, smaller second runway will be used mainly for domestic and chartered traffic, leaving the longer southern runway available for heavy jets.
The international terminal has now been extended so that it can accommodate the huge A380.
