History

Hartsfield–Jackson Airport began in 1925 by developing the old Atlanta Speedway track in an airfield, and in 1926 the airport had its first commercial flight.

The airport won numerous titles and plaudits including, World’s Busiest Airport in passenger volume in 1999, before becoming the World’s Busiest Airport in terms of both passenger traffic and landings and take-offs in 2000, Air Cargo Week’s “Airport of the Year” and Air Transport Research Society’s Award of Excellence for Efficiency in 2009.

The Candler airfield was renamed Atlanta Municipal Airport in 1929 and then in 1971 to William B. Hartsfield Atlanta International Airport before finally being named Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport in 2003.
