History

Antwerp Airport is steeped in history, as the airport lies on the site of the “Aéroclub d’Anvers”, where in 1909, the first demonstration of aircraft in Belgium took place. The new Deurne Airport, as it was formerly known, was officially inaugurated in 1923 and was used by both the military and flying schools.

In December 1929, the first stone of the airport building was laid. By this time the airport already had air links to many of the major cities in Europe.

By the end of the 20th century however, passenger numbers at Antwerp were beginning to fall. Therefore, in 2006 a brand new passenger terminal was opened in an attempt to boos the airport’s popularity once again.
