Positioned just 6 miles north of the centre of Dublin, Dublin International Airport is the busiest airport in Ireland.It serves many international destinations and has direct long haul links to the Middle East and the US.As well as handling established airlines, it also handles significant private jet traffic.

The airport is one of only two airports in the Republic of Ireland to contain US border preclearance for flights to the United States.This allows passengers to arrive in the US as domestic passengers, allowing for quick entry into the United States.

History

In 1936 the airline Aer Lingus was created by the Irish Government, originally conducting operations from the Casement Aerodrome in Baldonnel.

Shortly after, it was decided that a purpose built civil airport should be constructed to replace the Aerodrome.

Construction of Dublin Airport began in 1937 and by late 1939 all required infrastructure was in place and in January 1940 flights commenced from the airport.

During World War 2, services were reduced significantly, with the only international route being between Dublin and Liverpool.

Since the 1950s the airport has expanded significantly, with improvements in runway size and facilities including the recent construction of a second terminal. The new terminal was built to cope with increased passenger numbers.
